Join us at ISSM 2014, a week-long conference set in the scenic seaside city of Pacific Grove, California, where we will learn more about the latest developments in subsurface microbiology and microbial ecology, while enjoying the natural beauty of one of California's most breathtaking state parks.

The conference program includes:

  • Four plenary sessions featuring keynote presentations from invited experts across the globe.
  • Ten topic sessions divided into three tracks, representing over 220 oral and poster presentations on the newest developments in subsurface microbiology and ecosystems research.
  • Two networking receptions highlighting poster presentations.
  • Awards for the three best student posters.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, including an outdoor barbecue social and dinner featuring a bonfire and s'mores.
  • Two-hour lunches, allowing time to socialize, relax, or enjoy the outdoors.
  • Each lunch break will feature a different free guided tour of Asilomar State Beach, including a 2-mile walk along the picturesque coastal trail.
  • A full day of optional group excursions to explore the peninsula and experience adventure on land or sea.

Guided Lunch Tours

As a special feature for ISSM 2014 attendees, we will be offering a variety of free guided tours of Asilomar State Beach by California State Park rangers. Tours will be offered during the 2-hour lunch period, allowing enough time to eat and enjoy the beautiful scenery of our unique conference grounds by the sea.

Monday, October 6: 12:45 p.m. — Conservation Tour
Join a California State Park environmental scientist to learn about the impact of Asilomar's water conservation plan on its dunes and forest habitats. 50 minutes.
Tuesday, October 7: 12:45 p.m. — Asilomar Tour
Ramble about the conference grounds for an overview of its founding and history, Julia Morgan's architecture, and the restoration and preservation of the local dunes and forest. 50 minutes.
Thursday, October 9: 12:45 p.m. — Coastal Trail Walk
Take a brisk, 2-mile guided group walk along the spectacular Asilomar Rocky Shores Coastal Trail. You may spot whales! 1 hour.

Ice Breaker: Soccer on the Beach

Time: During the Lunch Break (12:45 pm to 1:30 pm))

Join us out on the beach for a fun, energetic conference ice breaker.During lunch on Tuesday, October 7, we will be organizing a free soccer game for our conference attendees. Equipment and space out on the beach will be available. The only question is how many teams and fields will be needed. Please help us better plan this ice breaker event by letting us know if you are interested in playing.

Barbecue Social & Dinner — Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

ISSM 2014 will feature a barbecue social and dinner held outdoors at a picnic area on Asilomar's forested conference grounds. The barbecue dinner menu will include a mouth-watering selection of grilled meats and seasonal vegetables, like pork baby back ribs and farmer's ratatouille, as well as traditional barbecue side dishes like potato salad, picnic slaw, jalapeño cornbread, and more. The best part — we will have a bonfire and plenty of chocolaty-gooey s'mores to satisfy your sweet tooth! Meat lovers and vegetarians alike will delight in this aromatic outdoor feast.
